Where coaching encourages the client or coachee to work the issue or challenge in structured way through support, encouragement and discussions with the coach, mentoring draws on the skills, knowledge and experience of the coach to help guide and advise the client on the course of action to follow or at least consider the best course of action as they work on the challenge themselves.

In addition to his very broad knowledge as a generalist in a wide range of trading activities, Alan utilises his experience of very many foreign markets to advise concerning Import & Export procedures, and particularly the cultures and business practices applicable. Where necessary Alan will always direct his clients to a network of professionals specialising in areas like innovation & technology, employment law, finance & accounting, and training.
Business Support
From seven years experience delivering government support schemes including General Support for Business, Specialist Marketing & IT Support, to the current growth programmes (delivered by Venture Wales), the Welsh Single Investment Fund (SIF) and Graduate Support Scheme, Alan is well positioned to introduce and offer advice leading to successful applications for capital equipment and other grants appropriate to the clients business.

Often the main motive behind the production of a Business Plan with supporting financial information is satisfying the banker, or external financier or both, and those offering grant support, but Alan considers the vital contribution of the business owner, whose plan it is and must be to be the key issue, for they obtain the key benefit of sound planning. He will assist the client as needed to achieve a sound plan, and with introductions to appropriate sources of finance.

Alan Cathery has been a Business Adviser since 2002 and is a member of the the Institute of Business Consultants.
Alan specialises in business management, particularly in the areas of Business Start-ups, Growth and Development, and Marketing and Sales. Alan is a generalist with a very broad base of experience including but not limited to technical engineering, consumer goods, timber manufacturing, shipping, travel and insurance activities.
Since 2002, Alan has been advising and mentoring a very wide range of SME's small and large, largely in North & Mid Wales. Keeping up-to-date he has in 2008 passed the OCR's NVQ4 in Business Advice, and his Coaching and Mentoring ILM level 5 result is pending.
Alan maintains an interest in International Trade, Import and Export, utilizing the experience of 28 years working and living overseas. Overseas work included managing branch, area and country operations for two major international trading companies (Inchcape Malaysia and Lindeteves-Jacoberg)from 1888 to 2002 Alan managed Seeley International's European business creating, visiting and supporting regular customers in 29 countries from Iceland to Israel. S.I are a leading Australian manufacturer of Air conditioning equipment.
Alan is now based in Lixwm near Holywell, North Wales providing business advice, coaching and other services mainly across the Chester and North Wales area.
In his spare time Alan works extensively to both promote and look after the interests of Royal British Legion and currently holds the post of Chairman for the North Wales District and is the Membership Council Member for Wales.
